hey guys,
I'm in a point where I couldn't afford to buy anymore seachem fertilizer formula so I decided to go do my own mix, but As the title of my post indicates...do I really need RO or distilled water to mix the solution or could i use tap water cause I have no method of getting RO or distilled for free....lol...thanks

No, you can use regular tap water - Just remember that tap water has chlorine in it and you'll eventually be adding this to your tank. Personally, I don't even worry about it. The amount is so minimal in a 55 gallon that i'm sure it makes no difference to anything. Alternatively, use tank water.

I thought you had to use r/o water or deionized because tap water containing PO4, NO3 and such which will alter your calculations, and give you more of the substance you want to add.

You can buy deionized water from car shops for under a £1 for a few liters.

I guess it all depends on your tap water. Mine has 0 nitrates, but let's say someone has 5ppm in 5ml of tap water.

That's 1ppm in 1ml. Add that to a 50 gallon tank (50 gallons = 200l (approx) = 200,000 ml)

So in a 50 gallon tank you would be diluting that concentration of 1ppm to : 0.000005 ppm

So that's for 1ml of the tap water. Even if you add 100ml you still have a concentration of 0.0005 ppm

You can imagine how much you'd have to add to get a rise of 1ppm in the tank.

Thanks for the comments guys, but I decided to go with distilled water since they aren't that expensive, I both two 4 L jugs that only cost me less than 5 bucks...BTW i'm using Fleet Enema as a source for my phospate, but i'm not sure how much should I add on my tank to reach 1 ppm....my tank is 20 gallons and I check my phosphate yesterday and is below .5...thanks...

I think the concern lies with the dry ferts reacting with anything already present in the tap water. Certain elements are known to oxidise quickly in hard water for instance.

Ferts will dissolve easier in RO too.
