When I read that a certain fish prefers a planted tank, is that moreso for the cover that the plants provide, or the effect that live plants have on the environment? I have some live plants in my tank, but they aren't fairing well and it is hard to gravel vac anywhere near them without uprooting them.

Would fake plants be sufficient for a fish that prefers that sort of environment?

Anyone?

Both. Many fish like the cover of the plants plus plants improve the water quality in general (uptake of nutrients). If you have a good cleaning crew, you don't need to gravel vac close to the plants. Put them in groups together and only clean where the substrate is bare.
