Questions About Algae

I have a few questions about algae:

1.) How much is too much?

2.) There is green algae growing on my plants, can it kill them?

3.) There is a brownish substance (brown algae? diatoms?) growing on an ornament in my aquarium. I don't know what it is; could it be harmful?

Hi,
I have heard that algae is o.k for the fish because they eat it, so the algae cant be hermful to the fish. I think that if you have the light on for more hours in a day it does not grow as fast( well that is what i have herd )
