I have read the pinned topic on hospital tanks, but still have this question if anyone can help:

After cycling my new tank (in process now), and moving my fish into it, I shall be using my old tank as a hospital tank. It's a 60 litre.

How do I go about keeping the filter in the hopsital tank mature, given that for the most part there will be no fish in there? Is it a case of adding amonnia on a regular basis?

Thanks for any help.

Easiest way is to run it in your main tank along with the existing one. Then move it to the hospital tank when it's needed.
You could feed the tank with ammonia, but if it's only going to be used intermittently then swapping the filter over is easier. I'm guessing that your new tank is larger so the small filter shouldn't cause any problems.

2 options - one safe one not so safe but a lot easier.

1 - clean the filter out completely once you've transfered the fish, fishless cycle it, then keep adding ammonia every day to maintain the filter, then when you need to use it do a 90% water change and put the fish instraight away. pain in the posterior but completely safe hygiene wise etc.

2 - take the old filter and run it in the new tank, keep the old tank clean and empty elsewhere then when you need to use it fill it up with water, heat to the correct temp then transfer the filter and fish over. a lot easier but there's some risk of cross contamination.... however if your gonna be moving the poorly fish anyway and treating it your fine, after use though you should scrub the filter and replace all the media with new, then run it on your new tank to cycle again and just leave it there.

Many thanks for your replies, both.
It certainly gives me something to go on for when my old tank is empty.
Much appreciated!
