Question On Plants And The Cleaning Pump

I am going to put some gravel and plants in my tank but when you clean the tank with the siphon, how do you stop sucking up the gravel when old food has sunk to the bottom?

In a planted tank you dont bury the siphon in the gravel. If you have sand or gravel over the soil you just move the gravel vac above the gravel so that it lifts any light debris, with enough plants the plants will use the muck anyway.
