Hi,

I've received some Java Moss from Last Trading Post about 2+ weeks ago. I've tied it down on the rocks to make some sort of carpet for my shrimp and cories to play with. However, it doesn't seems to grow well. There are a few areas on the moss which is brownish... is this dying/dead moss? If so, should I leave or remove it?

My other plants, Amzon Sword and Vallis (I think) are doing rather well.

Info about the tank:
Volume - 60L
Lighting - 30w (2 x 15W 6500K T8) on for 12hrs/day
DIY CO2
Sand + Aquatic compost substrate
Fertilizer - Flourish Excel+ and EI

Thanks in advance. :good:

okay ,
3 more questions:
what do you feed your fish?
how often do you feed them?
how long has the tank been running?

i've fed my fishes a variety of bloodworm, tetra flakes, tetra pleco wafers, and sometime spirulina.

Fed them twice daily.

The tank has been running for about 2 months. Cycling for 5 weeks (fishless with Amazon Sword + Vallis) and the fishes introduced straight after, along with the moss.

Thanks.

I really cant think of anything that could be causing this,
maybe a possible lack of flow in the tank..
or maybe the PH is too high..
do you know any of the Stats of the water?

What is the temperature in the tank? Java moss typically does well under a wide range of temps but most mosses do best in cooler water. It could just be that the moss is dying back from the differences in your water from the water at the source. It should come back and do well.

my moss was like yours, some turned brown, but now, it's bloody overgrown lol! Ihave homemade co2, 28 deg temp, no ferts yet lol!

mine didn't change after a few weeks. it didn't grow or deteriorate. now it's starting to grow.

ive tested out the temperature theory,
i grown a moss wall in a coldwater tank in a matter of months
and also ive grown it in 27-28C and the only differance i noticed is that it tends to grow much more densely in warmer temperatures.

ok thanks for all the replies.

my water stats are fine: pH 7.52, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate about 25, hardness 7dH, temp 23C.
flow using Interpet PF2 internal filter.

I really don't want to upped the temperature as it might be too warm for the fishes. So, i guess i'll just wait a while and see whether they will grow back. question still whether i need to remove this brownish moss or just leave it? my thinking is that this dying moss may stunting the growth but i don't know....

thanks again

you can deffinately up the temperature by 2-3 degrees, im sure someone will be able to say wether to do it all at once or in stages

you want to crank up the temp mate

I done mine by 2 deg daily, but its preference :)
