Do any of you find that the tank water evaporates so fast in this weather you have to top off every two days? Just wondering if I need to crank up the humidifier in the house. It doesn't seem very dry though.

The water in my tank evaporates pretty quick, but not as quick as yours seems too. I replenish my water once every couple of weeks.

The greater the temp difference between your tank and the room the better chance the water will have to evaporate.

As for correcting for evaporation every two days. Just fill up your tank very full and don't worry about it so much. Before I left for vacation I had the tank brimming with water because I knew that it would evaporate off.

good luck

I top mine off every other day also, but my apartment is really dry and I don't want any surface movement because of my live plants (I have HOB filters on my tanks).

Mine evaporates pretty fast. I don't top it off but when I do weekly water changes, I put in more than I took out.

Yeah, I'm particularly concerned with my 10 gallon planted. I've got a Penguin 125 on there. If the water level goes down slightly I hear it. Also, I have enough surface agitation as it is and I want to keep it to a minimum for the plants.

I just like to keep the tanks full to the top because all of them have power filters and I like them quiet. Thanks for responses.

So do I... Is there a way I can reduce surface agitation if I have a HOB filter? I can't adjust the flow like an AquaClear so that's a no go. I tried cutting out a piece of plastic from a beverage bottle and placing that on the outflow so that the curved design of the bottle caused the water flow to get slower.

My water evaporates fast. I lose about 2 gallons in 3 days, but my water is alos at 80F. But we have crazy weather, one week snow storm next week 50F.

IF I go for a week without topping off the water, I average 15% water loss through evaporation a week. I don't need a humidifier because the tanks do it for me.

I'm losing water like nuts in my aquariums but I figure it is because the room and outside is very dry that is just simply gets sucked up into the air.
On a earlier comments note, if you are using a hang on filter with a lid to reduce the surface agitation and power I got a big block of filter foam from a local pets store and cut it to the size of my opening where the water is returned to the tank. It greatly reduced current from the filter.
