Question About Substrate

i was wonder if i could change my substrate from gravel to sand but i have a under gravel filter system can i put sand in the tank or will it screw with the system. I currently have malawie cichlids will this work i would like to make it sand instead of gravel

Frankly speaking, I think undergravs are obsolete in anything other then a planted calm community tank. Especially with mbuna who like to dig to the bottom.

as for sand in a ugf, well it's common sense isnt it?

You can get crushed coral which will buffer your PH, I dont think you can use a UGF with this either as particles are small and will probally get sucked up and grind away at your filter...
