Question about sand

I have redone my tank using sand as a substrate, but something just occurred to me. How do you vacuum in a sand-bottomed tank? Wouldn't all the sand get sucked up?

Just hover the end of the siphon about half an inch over the top of the sand. All the poo and crap will swirl up and the sand mostly stays put. If you should get some sand, it's going to be heavy enough to settle right back down.
