Good afternoon!

I have a female fancytail guppy that looks like she is about to pop. We have been looking for her to have babies for a few days now, so far-nothing. The kids are driving me crazy asking WHEN? WHEN? !!!

Question--is there any way I can tell if it is getting close, other than her being huge?

Thanks for anything you can pass on! :D

Not really as sometimes they can hold onto them, deciding when to have them, she will like to be alone and get abit moody chasing other fish away.

Usually when the dark spot on the female guppy gets really dark, she will let them out soon. If your tank conditions are good for the guppy, I'm sure she'll let it out soon. There's really no exact way of telling, but the more you see it happen, the more experienced you'll get on telling when they'll let the fry out.

Thanks guys for the replies....guess we'll just have to keep watch. SURELY it will be very soon!

Well, I woke up this morning to a bunch of babies! I guess I got it pretty close! She had them during the night and there's probably at least 30. I was hoping it would be in the day where we could watch but oh well.....maybe next time. I see only one that's not fully developed.
I am going to get a fry tank this weekend and use my tank water to fill it. Is it a good idea to put a little snail in there to clean up the bottom? Or maybe something else?

A snail would work. Just be aware, depending on the kind, you may have a lot more snails. What size tank do you have?

And you said you're going to fill it with tank water? Do you have a cycled filter for it?

And finally, congratulations on the babies! You must be so excited! :D

Thanks for the reply. I already have a 29 gal cycled tank and I have had a very nice apple snail in there for a while. I've read all about the baby snail explosion 'potential'...lol. tho I haven't seen any baby apples in mine yet. When I first set my tank up, I got some baby snails off some purchased live plants but they seem to have kinda went away on their own. Guess somebody ate them.....

Deanna, who's enjoying watching all these babies!

Congrats, not long before more on the way, they breed like rabbits.
