Hi - recently our "fairground" gold fish grew out of its third tank, so after having purchased a good size tank for the fish (40 litres) - he grew again so we decided enough was enough, and gave the fish away to a much happier home. It is almost as if the faster we replaced the tank with a bigger and better one the more the damn thing grew ! - In fact it was actually a big fat white thing when it moved out.

Anyway, moving on after taking advice from the shop on preparation, we set about getting the tank ready for some new fish - just basic beginners style. We purchased 4 White Mollies - I can't remember anything else about them as the Missus bought them, but we were told they were males. One in particular was much smaller and much "greyer". The other three dominated the tank and one in particular bullied the smallest which spent most of its time hiding in the corner. We increased the stock with females on advice from the shop to distract the boys and after three days of mayhem, attention switched back to the now greyer small fish. By now he was not longer hiding he was just sitting near the surface almost motionless. Anyway he died, and now a couple of the others have started to change shade and are beginning to look more silver than white and one has a noticeable greying fin - there looks like no damage to the fins or anything wrong at all, they all seem a bit merry and are not showing signs of being ill chasing each other around, we can tell the females as well.

I have scoured around and cannot really find much about the colour change whether it is normal or disease, we have now had them 18 days and the tank was set up with advice from the shop. The only contamination was the bag given by the shop on the second lot.

Anyone offer any direction on this ? - As I say, we are absolute beginners who won a goldfish at a fair in 2005, cared for it and spent about £ 100 on tanks and kit to make its life happier - we have sort of got used to having fish around so want to carry on.

i wouldnt worry about the colour change. i got 1 male and 3 femails a few mounths ago and they slightly changed shade a bit. they have had proberly around 200 fry between them mayb a bit less and when the fry grow up they go from grey to white so could be growth or somethin, anyhow would worry. not much you can do if they was ill anyway realy
