I have been using KNO3 which I obtained through a hydroponics outlet here in Australia. The product comes in 25kg bags and I purchased about 1kg to use as a fertilizer for my planted tank. The specification for the product are: 37.4% Potassium and 13.5% Nitrogen. I understand that pure KNO3 has around 38.7% K and 61.3% NO3 so the specs above suggest it is reasonably pure.

However,

When I prepare a stock solution by dissolving 1 tsp (approx. 5.6g) in 350ml of water and then add 10ml of the stock solution to 10 l of water I should get around 10mg/l NO3 - Right? My Nitrate test kit registers zero. Furthermore, the stock solution which should contain around 10,000mg/l NO3 registers as around 10mg/l.

Am I doing something wrong or is there a problem with either the KNO3 I purchased or the test kit?

Has anyone else had this problem?

Note I normally prepare s stronger stock solution than the one described above for use in my tank but I just wanted to test it using an example with round numbers.
