Hey Everyone,

My fish currently has gill disease: one of its gills is swollen. I went to the store and bout Maracyn-TC to treat my fish. I was wondering if I can treat my fish in the main tank with the other fish. The reason why I ask this is because I don't have a hospital tank. My main tank consists of 6 fish: Australian Rainbow (the one with the gill disease), dalmatian molly, yellow molly, two red platies, and an albino. I also have two live plants. My water levels are in perfect condition and my temperature is 80 degrees.

I'm just wondering if it's safe for me to treat my fish without impacting my other fish and the cycle of my tank.

Thank You.

Just treat the whole tank but don't forget to increase aeratiion,
Good luck.

Well, it has been five days that I've medicated the tank and so far... it looks like my Australian Rainbow fish has not improved. In fact, I think his gill has become even more swollen. There is more pinkish/reddish color on him. He still has his appetite and he is swimming but the gill is not looking good. Also, my tank is a mess! It has a tan color now because of the medication and now I have bubbles on the surface. I know I have to be patient for the water to clear... but seeing how my fish has not improved is not making me happy. I hope this does not mess with my cycle/healthy bacteria.

Need to look at your water atats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.
Any excess mucas on the body or gills.
Red infllamed gills can be also bad water quality to gill flukes.

Gill problems can be caused by flukes, fungus or even bacterial infections. Rainbowfish can develop tumours under their gill covers. These appear as pink coloured lumpy growths coming out from around the gill cover.
Any chance of a pic.
Lots of rainbowfish problems can be cured with rock or sea salt. Try 1 heaped tablespoon per 20litres of tank water. If there is no improvement after 2 days then add another dose of salt.
