Ok so i have about 70 fry currently in a 10 gallon bucket. I have set up a 40 gallon buckets with a filter and heater to transfer the fry later today. I have an aquaclear 110 formerly 500, hooked up on the side of the bucket. Its my only extra filter and i was curious if that will be too strong a pull. Will i lose fry to the filter?

No one?? Please!!! I want to make the transfer tonight.. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.. The filter is good for tanks up to 110 gallons like i said this is a 40 gallon bucket... Too strong for the fry to avoid being sucked into the filter???

Well since it's fry, my guess is that it could be to strong

If you can, keep a sponge filter in your main tank behind a big rock or something. Then when you need it, pull it out and use it. Sponge filters are good for fry tanks. I know it's to late for that now...but maybe an idea for you in the future.

What about getting a sponge filter and then rinse your current filter in the bucket to seed the sponge filter? Just an idea ...don't know how well it'll work.

I have used sponge filters in the past.. I must say i absolutely hate them but i know they are great for the fry tanks. I currently took the 110 off the main tank and am now running it on the bin. They fry have not yet been transfered to the bin i plan on doing so tonight. I was thinking about wraping the intake with sponge filter umm i dont know what you call it, cotton.... I have to make a run to the petstore after work anyways maybe i will pick up a sponge filter anyways. Thanks for the tip!

I thought about covering the intake w/something. It may slow the flow a little bit....but I don't know if any babies would still get stuck to it depending on how big they are and how strong the flow is

I would say i have roughly 100 fry. I stripped my Venustus a little over a week ago and have had the fry in a bucket with an aerator and constant water changes from the main tank. Yesterday i stripped my other holding female and added her fry about 35 more. I might stick with the sponge filter but i will also try to cover up the 110 until the sponge filter settles in to the tank and i feel the fry are safe with the water conditions.

Good call :good: Let us know how it goes!!

Will do. I will take some pictures of the bucket they are currently in and then the new bucket... You will have to run me through the steps i take to upload them on here. I have heard many times photobucket, which i have an account too but dont know how to go about uploading them on here... Pictures will be up sometime this evening if i remember to get around to that.

You're welcome :)

I hope it helps.

A word of advice. I would start up an album labeled cichlids (or whatever you want to call it) just in case you end up putting tons of pics on there. I didn't do that and have a few hundreds pics but can't organize them now b/c if I do, it'll break the links :grr: and all the pics i've posted will have broken links and won't work. Just a tip :good:

Its a good tip. I will be working on that in a minute. They are in the bin now and i packed some filter fiber around the intake of the 110. I hope it works. I saw one of them right away get sucked into the fiber but as soon as i touched him he moved along and i packed it some more.

Pictures will go up tonight, i had problems with my camera the other night and my intentions were to put them up last night but there was an emergency in my neighborhood. Anyways im excited to see what you all think, well at least you KJ but yeah didnt forget about you guys.
