From time to time my clown loaches will do what looks yorning! I know there not but why do they do this? A couple of the sword tails also do it too. Also is it normal for fish to scratch/ itch them selves on plants ect? My water is fine and none have any visable parasites. The itching isnt constant its just every now and then.

Can you post water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, they will flick now and then mainly after a water change, but if they are doing it alot you could have a parasite, any laboured breathing, check there gill for excess mucas on them, also do they look red and inflamed, yawning yes most fish do it, but also it can be from poor water quality.

Ammonia 0ppm, PH 7.0, Nitrite, 0ppm and Nitrate 20-40. Last Water change was done on xmas eve which was approx 15-20% so another is due. The gills are slightly red but no mucas on them.

Well water quality is good you could have gill flukes.

Gill Flukes

Symptoms:

Fish with gill flukes have gills that may appear red and inflamed, bleeding or slimy. Excess mucous or puss may exude from the gills. Sick fish can be observed gasping for air near the surface. This disease is most common in younger fish and fry, who are more susceptible to the parasite.

Cause:

The monogenetic fluke Dactylogyrus, which destroys gill tissue and damages blood vessels in this region.

Treatment:

Treat with Clout, Fluke Tabs, Paraform, Trifon, Paragon, Quick Cure, Formalin, orParasite Guard. Gill flukes are highly contagious, therefore, all fish in the same aquarium should be treated.
