I just purchased two 1.5 inch convicts at my LFS, i've been googling pictures of Black Convicts and noticed that my convicts are much lighter compared to the ones online.

So my question is will my convicts grow and turn darker, or stay the light colour? btw, i am using crushed coral substrate, would that make a difference?

Also, will diet change their colour as well?

There are three main color varieties for convicts: Black (standard), Pink, and Marble. Marble is like a mix of Pink and Black, and is the rarest. Some black convicts are almost totally black, some are quite light in color. They may get more colorful as they mature, or they may not. They also will change color intensity with water conditions, diet and stress. They might just be over stressed from the move, and when they get comfortable the color may get stronger.

You've picked great fish to keep, good luck with them.

Thanks for the quick reply. They are beautiful, i fell in love with them when i saw them at the LFS.

The owner told me these were black convicts, but they aren't as dark as the ones i see online. I really like the ones that are really dark, the stripes on my convicts aren't really that dark..i figured with maturity they would turn darker. Can you confirm this?

as they mature they will colour up, but also like said when they get settled in they will darken up..........

as for coral sand, yes that can make them lighter! my con I had a long time back was a light washed-out grey when she was on coral sand, I put her in the arowana tank with normal stones and she soon coloured-up, she was around 2 - 3inches..........

most females will have an orange belly [but in some rare occassions so can males]

as for the DIET, it is always good to give them a good pellet as their staple food (IMO!) which you can supplement with other things.

this was my little lady
