My filter shoots out bubbles and i was wondering what this was for?
If it stopped what would happen?
If i added an airstone via an air line does that do the same job?

Cheers

How low is the water level in the tank? Because in my tanks if the water level is a little low it blows bubbles as it hits the water. Also you don't need a air stone as long as you a filter running you should be fine :D

well the old filter had a tube that sat outside the tank and blew bubbles but the new one dont unless you adjust this thing at the top... i just wondered the reason for the bubbles?

Cheers

Do you mean your old filter was a filter sponge or a under gravel filter? Also how low is the water level in the tank?If its lower that were the output of your power filer then that would cause bubbles to appear when it hits the water. Can you post a pic of the filter and what bubbles look like when the filter hits the water?

True. Unless you are fully stocked. Most people also chuck a air pump during the summer as heat can effect the amount of oxygen in the water. :)

I had a filter like your old one and it just sucked in air from the tube that was outside of the water and pumped it through your filter and out. The bubbles break the surface of the water allowing gasses to difuse out of the water helping to remove gasses that aren't needed.

so...

Do i need to have this because the bubbles stopped but ive added an airline with an air stone?

If you have an internal filter, this will almost certainly be due to a venturi tube. This is a part of the filter that sits above the water line and mixes air with the water.

The idea of this is to get bubbles into the water, to aid the oxygenisation of the water. However, the bubbles last so little in the water that there really is no benifit to the bubbles on their own at all. Except they may look cool.

The best way to oxygenate your water is to make sure the surface area of the water is as big as possible, to aid gaseous transfer. Ripples are the obvious one - and these are usually found with bubbles, be them from air stones, filters or what ever.

In conclusion, no you don't really need them, if the surface of your water is agitated already (i.e from the filter output without bubbles).
