So I have a 10 gallon tank with 3 glo-lite tertas, 2 silver hatchet fish, 2 ocelot danios, 2 halfbanded rasboras, and a betta.

I'm almost 100% positive the betta has dropsy(caught it too late unfortunatly).

My question is should I remove him from the tank or will it be fine. He is still swimming and eating like normal but is extremely bloated

Thanks
Frenchie

I would remove him if you can keep him in a 2gal tank w/ a heater. Are his scales sticking out like a pine cone? Do you know you water stats- Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, and PH? How long has the tank been set up?

His scales are only slightly sticking out like a pine cone but his abdomin is extremely bloated. All the water levels were fine as of a couple of days ago and the betta has been bloated for over week and a half. The tank has been set up for around 5 months.

I'm sorry, I had a similar problem with one of my corydoras catfish a few weeks ago. Dropsy is often a side effect of something elts. treating with an anti backterial medication might help. Also puting aquaruim salt in the water might help too. Put in one table spoon of salt for every ten gallons. I'm not sure how bettas react to salt though. This helped me, I hope it helps you too. I'm no expert though, so pleas corect me if I'm wrong! I'd also do a seach on dropsy.

Epsons salt baths are better it helps draw the fluids out.
One scales start to stick out last stage organ failure.
Best to issolate the fish as if its dies in the tank and a fish pecks at the body they can pass it on.
Look under dropsy and salt in medications.

So my betta is still really swollen but other than that is fine. Could it be something else other than dropsy. Most information I have read about dropsy and bettas says it will kill them between 5-15 days. He has been like this for over 5 weeks.

here is a pic of what he has looked like for about the last four weeks

Having had bettas in the past that looked like that - How much is he eating? It looks like he's eating himself to death. I was foolish when I started keeping fish and desperately tried to keep bettas in my community tank - even though I killed about 6 of them just by being stubborn.

Bettas will not stop eating. It took me a very long time to realize this. If there is food, they will eat it to the point they will burst. It's happened 4 times, no matter what I did to try and stop them from getting at the food. It's like all their survival instincts have been bred out of them. Normal fish, like tetras, will eat their fill and will normally stop when they can't eat anymore. Not those pretty stupid fish. The other 2 bettas I lost because they swallowed ghost shrimp whole and choked to death. Diet is not in their vocabulary.

I have three bettas now, and I love them to death, but I keep them in their own tanks without any other fish. It's just too hard to try and feed other fish (or frogs or snails) without the betta stealing the food and overeating. I imagine that you could confine him at feeding time and let him out only when the other fish have finished, but all the betta's I've had clean the tank floor better than any bottom dweller out there - if the bettas sense food, they'll dig into the gravel to get at it!

I've had bettas with dropsy, and they get swollen and popped scales over their entire bodies, not just their stomach area. There is also the possibility that it could be a tumor, but I'm betting that it's from eating way too much. The good news is that they'll normally recover - feed very lightly (one or two peices of betta pellet) every other day until he starts slimming down. Stay away from the treats like bloodworms until he's back to normal. And if he'll eat pieces of frozen shelled pea (thawed, of course) I've heard that can speed up the process.

It looks bloated and doesn't appear to have dropsy, he also might be constipated. Do you see him go to the bathroom? how much are you feeding him. I personally would get him his own tank. and as wodesorel said feed him cooked peas with the shell removed these will help. I suggest feeding him only small amounts of peas for 5 days to see if he improves.
