I have a bit of stone in my tank with a cross shape made of quartz in it. It has been in my tank since day 1 and none of my fish have died or became ill.

So i was wondering what the effects were and is bad just in large doses, as I say it's a really small peice.

your thoughts?

cheers

Glad the quartz is safe, I have a large piece in my tank. I have wondered occasionally if it was ok or not but the water quality has always been ok, although the ph is on the high side (7.5). :)

Cool cheers wolf, thats a relief because the quartz makes a smart scotland flag shape in the rock. It looks smart :hey:

Scotish flag shape??.....that sounds cool, my wife puts all sorts of gem stones in her tank because she is into the healing powers of semi preciouse stones etc.

.....I dont let her put anything in my tanks though because i dont know what is in them.

How does the the quartz make a scottish flag?......does it have a cross in the middle?

Yeah the stone is like a triangular shape with the the cross coming from the edges right through the centre. It's smart, my brother found it while he was doing some fencing up in the hills. So I boiled it for anhour and scrubbed it with vinegar it put it in the tank. It makes a smart centre piece.

i am also wanting to put in some amethyst but I am unsure about it.

Amethyst is a form of quartz, however it also contains Manganese and Iron.(this is what gives it the pale lilac to deep purple colours) darker the colour the more iron contained in it.

Ive got a tank with amethyst in, we use it for our breeding pair of angels, it was my wifes choice......something to do with its 'healthy qualities'...I dont know, Im not into all this witchcraft mumbo jumbo but you can get it in Dobbies garden centers.....thats the only place Ive seen it.

Yeah I am not bothered about healing properties, I doubt it would be the same for fish any way. It just looks smart.

Wolf: So If I got a light piece of amethyst I take it it would be ok to use?

big mick: Is it expensive to buy?

we sell amethyst at work for use in aquariums.
I wouldn't put really dark pieces in there but yes
paler pieces should be fine.

It was cheaper than I thought, I cant remember exactly how much it was but it does look smart and worth the money......might be expensive to kit out a big tank.
