I recently bought a secondhand tank with mature filter, I fed it up with ammonia and then added the majority of my stocking (see sig-Juwel vision) Hubby wanted to choose some fish and saw some very attractive guppies at a LFS. (They'd be to replace the 3 currently in the tank)
It's a long standing one, but the owner is ill and due to have heart surgery and so is winding the whole thing down and selling stuff off cheaply. The tanks are all run on separate filters. The guppies in the tank all looked healthy and I'm fairly sure they were the same ones we'd seen a few weeks before.
But another tank of platies looked ill, covered in white spots. I don't think it was ich, more something fungal.
The shop is being run by a teenage boy currently. He's very enthusiastic on the selling front, but when I pointed out 3 dead cories in a tank and suggested that he get them out, he said yeah.....have you seen these colourful fish we've got?
So I was twitchy about even buying the fish, so decided to quarantine them when I got home. They're in a big plastic container with plastic plants, a heater and filter with cycled media from the main tank. Ammonia has been perhaps just over 0 (you know that colour on the API kit which isn't yellow, but doesn't look as green as 0.25ppm?)
I ran 3 day treatments of esha 2000 and esha exit and haven't water changed since (6 days ago)
All 3 fish look healthy. How long would you quarantine for? It's been just over 2 weeks now, but I'm sure I read a few years ago somewhere, when I thought I'd got ich but it turned out to be something unidentified, that ich can appear after 6 weeks.
Sorry, that got long winded! All thoughts and advice very welcome, thanks
