As I sold all my tanks about 7 months ago before our new bundle of joy arrived in our lives...(.baby boy).. well to cut a long story short I am establishing a new much smaller fish room. Starting from scratch, having to cycle everything new from scratch.

So I am considering first, to set up a 2 foot , 25 gallon aquarium, establishing the bacteria in that filter... continue to research my Amazonian stockingfor the 85 Gallon,  then ln time use the 2 foot tank to quarantine. Ie to establish thingscould have a nice little community set up in there to establish things. Woul a QT tank have to be empty all the time ?

I have my 85 Gallon to set up too but want to be really sure what I am stocking and the 2 foot tank will help establish some beneficial bacteria in the filter and on items I can transfer to help when I do set up the  5 footer,

It always amazes me how fish keepers bypass the eventual QT tank and will risk loosing
fish or all their stock due to the sake of setting up a QT tank first.

I was thinking of making it a nice little community tank until such times as I am researched and know my stocking level for the 5 foot Amazonian.

I am used to African Cichlids and Beta fish so this is a whole new are of fish keeping, Amazonian Biotypes, I want to feel confident in before I set up.. Also part of my Autism, Aspergers conditions helps me to know the ins and outs of as much detail as I can before I start something new as well... I often resort to over kill of information ...with Aspergers, but I would rather be fully researched that go blindly into something.

Was wondering what people thought on this! ?

a trick I use is to have a small internal filter for my Q tank and I keep the media in my external canister for my main 240 litre tank. This means if I want to set up my Q tank I grab my internal filter for it, open the external canister, grab the sponges for the small internal, fit them in and I'm good to go. Perminantly cycled media :D

At the moment though I have 3 cory fry in my Q tank with 4 baby harlequins that I got from my lfs last week. I'm risking the health of my cory fry (home bred) but the harlequins are far too small to go into the main tank with a pair of angelfish and so my Q tank has become a baby grow out tank for now.

I know there many people who skip the quarantine process but there are some who have built up a trust in their lfs (myself included) and there are some who lack the space for a 2nd tank (I've only got space for my little 25 litre). I guess there are all kinds of reasons why people don't quarantine - some right, some wrong :)
