I've had an established aquascape tank going for over a year, and I noticed recently some plants arent taking too well anymore. Someone once mentioned putting a clean penny in the tankt's substrate to help the plants grow.

Im unsure about this as I have a shrimp in the tank as well as several fish.. would it be a good idea or no?

Probably wouldn't be a great idea as copper, a component of pennies, is toxic to invertebrates. I've heard of shrimp deaths with just the percentage of copper in some fish foods, so I'm sure a penny has more, though they don't have as much as they used to. They sell rootabs that are specifically designed for this sort of thing.

thats what I thought, copper's bad for shrimps, so I wanted to ask first.

thank you :)

i would think putting a penny in would be bad for everything in the tank, especially as it will quickly rust and accuimlate foreign bacteria within the tank that could be harmful to its inhabbitants.
