My M & F bettas have got to know each other rather well,, he's flaring and she's gone verticaly striped today. How long should I leave them together for the 'deed' to happen? I'll be keeping an eye on them anyway but it just looks that their time is right.

It shouldn't take more than a couple days. I definitely wouldn't leave them together longer than 4 days. If they haven't done the deed by then (or ripped each other to shreds) then I'd pull them, re-condition, and try again. It sounds like it won't take that long for your pair to get busy, though :) Good luck! :good:

Thank you for the reply. I'm sitting watching them and will seperate them again when I go to bed. He at this very moment is building a bubble nest and she's helping occasionaly too. Ohhhhh its just sooooo exciting.

After he builds the nest he will "sqeeze" the eggs out of her and put them in the bubble nest. When they finish this behavior you will need to separate them as he will became extremly defensive of the nest and attack her.

[He's still doing that, she's got loads of eggs which are also falling out without him squeezing. Problem being is that they are both eating the eggs  He's quite a gentleman, she has no damage at all to her and if she doesn't want his attention she swims off and he goes and blows some more bubbles. I have managed to get a video of the squeezing and some eggs falling.

in rare cases some bettas will eat their eggs, if the male has put them in the nest then is eating them i would remove him before he can eat them all. If he is eating them before this then i dont think you will be able to breed but im not 100% sure!!

is it this males first spawn?
if so he just needs to try again another time...
try re-conditioning them etc...

Hiya, Yes its first time for both of them. She still has eggs and they are still geting on well at moment so will leave them together today then see what happenes. Is it likely that any eggs that havent been eaten will survive without being in the bubble nest?

Can we see the vide?

I would love to be able to put the vid on but it is 84mb and I don't know how to make it small enough. Also the quality isn't brilliant due to reflections of the glass. I'd just crawled out of bed after spending most of night up watching them and wasn't prepared for it :( Its even too big to send via emails. I have compressed it and still no good so any suggestions would be helpful.
