Got home last night to see an 8 inch diameter thin slice of pumpkin in our thin tank.

Emma (wife) had decided to give it a try on the fish.... -_-

.....they loved it........when I got home from work, it had a BN on it and a crowd of platys pecking it.

This morning two BNs were roving over it and it was again being pecked by the Platys and Endlers. :kana:

It will come out this afternoon as I don't want to kill the water quality.......but any thoughts on using "other" vegetables or fruits for fish?

(Oh, and any problems with Pumpkins that I should be aware of?).

Did you cook or blanch the pumpkin at all before you put it in? Seems like a good idea, I don't suppose the fish will mind any carved out bits!

It was skinned.........and yes, it was from a carved one......

And just like Paul.......Emma had grown them "chemical free" on her allotment.

Took it out this afternoon and it was still nice and firm.........it was fresh, not cooked or blanched.... :D .

We visited our local fish shop at the weekend and they had brussel sprouts in their tanks which the fish seemed to love.

I sense another trip to the allotment. :D

Gotta be careful though....when I was 6 i stuck a bisquit from breakfest and decided that my family's prized show guppy collection would like a bite. Well it turns out that yeast dosent mix well with guppies. It destroyed all of them :(

One of my friends keeps chucking bits of bread and pasta in his tank - keep trying to tell him they aren't puppies!!! (Yes FB, i DO mean you! and I don't care if the fish do like it)

I'll try the pumpkin thing tomorrow!

If you really think about where these fish that we keep in our homes originally came from, most of them from warm tropical regions with lots of vegetation growing near water's edge, it's not really surprising that they would enjoy a wide variety of vegetables.

I feed my fish cucumber slices and lettuce leaves(homegrown), but I must admit, it never occured to me to feed them pumpkin. Thanks for sharing this with us. The mental image that I get of a jack-o-lantern sized pumpkin bobbing around in a 55 gallon aquarium is rather amusing. :D

I was thinking about that last week, feeding pumpkin to my plecs. A couple of stores had zuke on sale, so I stocked up the freezer. Think I'll try it though, still have freezer room.

Pumpkins can leach chemicals like DDT from the ground they grew on (other veggies and fruits probably can, too, but I just read about the pumpkin thing yesterday or today). Just an FYI :D

I feed my fish zucchini, cucumber, peas. I don't think I've fed 'em any other fruits or veggies. Oh, I've tried lettuce before, but it didn't seem to be very popular. The cuke and zucchini are favorites of the Otos!
