I purchased a pump from Allpondsolutions on ebay to help with my water changes. Basically I wanted a put some water into a bucket, temp match the water, add prime and then pump the water into the tank.

The pump arrived today, its a 'sunsun'. Advertised for fresh and salt water aquariums.

When I took the pump out of the box it smelt a bit of 'oil' so I ran it in a bucket and there is a film of oil sitting on the water in the bucket.

I take it this is not safe until all the oil is out? Shall I send this back and buy a decent eheim pump?

It's probably just lubricating oil, which isn't soluble in water anyway so what's the beef?

is it safe to use then? I don't know thats why I asked about the oil. I assumed everything apart from water, food, etc.. is dangerous to fish.

Just run some water through it first, they wouldn't use lubricating oil if it wasn't fish-safe.
