I kept a figure 8 puffer in a community tropical tank from youth to almost full grown (about 2") but he died in the end because we didnt move him to brackish quick enough :(

Puffers have a lot of personality, each one is different, and if you did try to keep one in a community tank you would need to have a back up plan in case things didnt go to plan either initially, or as the puffer matures. You might be lucky...but again you might not and you need somewhere for your puffer to life if the worst happens.

In my opinion puffers are such fantastic fish that they are worthy of a tank to themselves, they have enough personality and character to keep you more than entertained, and many species learn to recognise different people and react to each person differently. You will get a lot of pleasure from a puffer if you do decide to get one (can you tell I'm a fan??? :p )

Good luck with your decision!

I'll second that!

My two GSP's come to the surface for me, the front glass for my girlfriend and hide under the mopani wood when my little boy presses his nose to the glass (i know he shouldn't but he doesn't understand 'no' yet, he's only 20 months old).
