I have obtained 2 males and about 7 females from this species. The largest male is about 4 cm now. I am currently feeding them spirulina and dried bloodworm. The temp in the tank is about 22 celsius (my house temp in Mex at the moment). Water is pretty hard, pH around 7. The tank is bare (apart from some cabomba) and a powerfilter.

What should I do to keep these guys happy and being able to breed them? Are the fish already mature enough to be bred, as I read they can get around 3 inches which is about 10 cms, right?

Thanks, Eleonore

Great fish ;)

I had there back in the 90's. they will eat you out of house and home given a chance, I had some females hitting 90mm they love live insects, larger the better, these are crazy when feeding, so you have to keep the, well covered.

Fry are very difficult to save, as these fish will eat their fry! So don't expect to save the first few batches but your soon see how they develop and will soon lurn how the female looks just as the get ready to drop, thus giving you a chance to save the fry.

Thanks! Mine are still small then, as the largest male is about 4 cms. I do have the tanks covered but just to be sure, I will put another one, which only leaves a miniscule opening for the cable.

I will go hunting some large ants then that run around the house! :good:

Best kept in a large tank of at least 30 gallons. males can grow to about 3 inches females up to 4 inches this species is aggressive so best kept on there own not with smaller fish ). will be happy to breed at a pH of 7 and temp of 22 c . although they may not be mature enough to bred at 4 cm dried bloodworm and spirulina is fine also is good to feed some live foods I found it best to remove gravid females to a smaller tank with plenty of plants if giving the chance they will eat there fry .

if i remember Right helterskelter was it one of your females that dropped fry in the tank at a fish show lol

That right Fish48, it was Eastleigh in the late 90's had 50 fry on the show bench!

Still personaly i would love to get P. jonesi one day.

I really want one of those fish. Where did you get them?

Hi Xerotolerance!

In Mexico they are sold together with other livebearers as feederfish... I get them as such, importing will be difficult I am afraid. But try oldman or another American livebearer fan and I am sure they can help you obtaining some.

Wow! Thanks for your help. Ill be sure to ask him. :D
