I have some juveniles at the mo' at what age do they pattern up or have I got the wrong fish :/

I should imagine at about 1.5-2" like most mbuna.

Nice looking fish when coloured up :D

One of my favourites :D

Males tend to colour-up at the sub adult stage (around 2-2 1/2 inches). The females never reach the same levels of colour displayed by the males.

Useful link to info on Cichlid-Forum, check out the various pics - it will give you an idea of what to expect:

cheers guys. think I've either got all female or sum duds (all mustard yellow) and definately big enough to be properly coloured.

Yep should be no problem - no real aggressors in that mix and all are visually different. Should make for a stunning looking tank. :good:

Great, thanks.
So what kind of fish are very agressive, and I should stay away from?
I'm trying to get as much color in the tank as I can......

This is what I got so far..
55G with Fluval304 (looking to get a canister for extra filtration.
5 Yellow Labs
2 Cobalt blue zebra
2 Red zebra
2 Mbamba - I think both are female, I'll probably get a 1 male.

Any suggestions?

I really like the fish in your avatar.
I saw a fish at the store that was labeled Demasoni but it was purple instead of blue.... and the colors weren't anything as bright as the one in your avatar.

The fish in my avatar is a Demasoni - stunning fish but very aggressive. I wouldn't reccommend them for anything but a species only tank or with a colony of yellow labs. Can also be done as a single specimin in a mixed Mbuna tank but this is risky.

Some Mbuna i would reccommend avoiding due to aggression are:

Melanochromis Auratus
Melanochromis Chipokae
Pseudotropheus Demasoni
Maylandia Lombardoi

Any of the above can be kept in mixed Mbuna tanks but are all highly aggressive, especially Auratus and Chipokae.
