My LFS has these beauties. Seriously Fish seems to indicate they prefer hard water???? Have I got that right?

Yes, that is correct, a lot of the rainbowfish species (not all) need harder water.

They do better in harder water than soft water so a GH around 200ppm) between 150-300ppm) is fine.

Try to get 8-10 of them and if possible get a few more females than males because they only produce 1-2 eggs per day.

They looked stunning. I've got hard tap water at 15 GH, but currently putting the finishing touches to a set up that is 80% RO which translates to 5 or 6 GH. Degrees German. Not hard enough for them.

Is that because I need to replace minerals if I go above 50/50 ?
Yes. If you have too much r/o water it will be soft with fewer minerals so you will need to add more minerals to get the GH back up. Since you already have hard water, you may as well mix 50/50 or something similar to get the desired GH so you don't have to buy minerals to buffer the water.
