I had two stems of Cabomba and one of them grew much faster than the other, it grew to the top of the tank. So i cut it back, just above one of the bits where the branches come off, the node or whatever and planted the top in the gravel. This was a few weeks ago and still the Cabomba hasn't grown back, and is still topless. Now the second stem has grown right to the top of the tank, but i don't want to cut it becasue it might not grow back :(

What should i do?

Humm, tricky, if it were me when never I cut the top of to shorten it I would plant the cut stuff in the gorun next to the original bit that way you double the amount you have.

On a more general note, cabomba can be a tricky plant and I've found it only realy does well in high light, rich substrate tanks.

Thats what i did, and it didn't grow back :(

What about the bit that you cut off and planted. Has that taken root? It generallly takes a few weeks before you notice any side shoots come out from the place you cut off.

When i first setup my tank, (see my journal in my sig) cobomba was one of my best growers, it wouldn`t stop.
You don`t seem to have done anything wrong!! Just cut the stem at whatever hight you wanted just above a shoot, like you have done. I then found it grew back in two ways. Either turned the leaf into a stem and carried on growing or grew a new shoot next the where you cut and carried on growing. BUT the cut plant definately took longer to set off growing again then the replanted stem.

All i can suggest is as Sam said, plant your cuttings then you double your chances. Is the rest of the plant still green? if so its still alive and will hopefully re-shoot. It goes yellow if its dead so as long as it is green it will grow back!! Just takes a while for it to recover, then u`ll be off the marks again !!

Good luck,

let us know how it goes.

Chris

Thanks everyone

I've got a bit confused since i started of with 2 stems and now with only cutting it once i have 4 :S (i cant remmeber how) But one of them is really not doing very well. The first stem that i cut is all green, with the exception of the little bits of brown algae on it, I can see two little tiny minature shoots coming from the Camboma just where i cut it, hopefully this will grow back. But its been a few weeks now and still no change :( The second stem that i havent cut yet (the one i'm scared to cut) has been yellow at the bottom for some time now, but the plant keeps on growing!! :S :D

How long should the cut stem take to recover? I'm sure it gonng vary between different conditions, but i'd still like to know how long it took in your tanks?

Thanks
