I have a fish with Ich in a 5 gallon tank. The tank is probably only filled to 3 1/2 to 4 gallons right now because I've been adding salt and wanted the filter to make a bigger splash to help get more oxygen into the water.

I'm starting treatment with Rid Ich after salting and raising the temp has failed to clear up the problem. The directions are 1 teaspoon per 10 gallons. I'm not sure how much to add and I'm afraid of hurting the fish. I went ahead and put in maybe a third of a teaspoon, and I'll be checking on him all day to make sure he doesn't act stressed.

At the same time, I'm afraid I'm not giving him enough for the meds to be fully effective. I'm terrible at math, so if anyone can tell me how to calculate this, I'd be very grateful.

Also, should I leave the temp raised and keep adding salt while I'm also using the meds?

What is the fish? and is there any others in with it? That is a very small tank

What are the symptoms of the fish?

Raising the temperature just speeds the cycle of Ich and rarely if never actually gets rid of it from your tank or fish but the process of raising a tanks temperature is usually used in the treatment of Ich.

Personally I am not a fan of using salt to eradicate salt from a fresh water tank but that is a personal thing many do use it successfully.

If you have carbon in the filter? remove it as it will reduce the efficiency of your meds

It would help if you also supply water stats: Temperature, PH, Nitrate and Nitrite if you are not aware test strips are notoriously unreliable so use a liquid test kit like API freshwater test kit or similar.

Its a lot of questions but it does help the forum members help you more

It's a dwarf gourami, and he's alone. I plan to move him to my 20 gallon as soon as he's completely free of Ich.

0 Ammonia
0 Nitrites
0 Nitrate
7 PH
Current temp 82

That's with the API master kit

Keep in mind though that I do a %25 or more water change every day to every other day because of the size of the tank. It is a mature tank (he's been in it 8 months), but I feel more comfortable doing frequent water changes.

He's always been very healthy and active and still is. He's eating well, and still coming over to greet me. His only symptoms are a few white dots on his tail and dorsal fin. I have seen him rubbing against the gravel a few times.

He had ICH a month or more ago and I was able to clear it up with the salt treatment, but this time it just haven't been effective. Since it reoccured and there's been no new additions to the tank, I have to assume I near really got rid of it the first time around.

There's no carbon in the filter.
