Hi all,

I am quite new to keeping an aquarium and have had it a couple of months and have a couple of friends who have been extremely helpful however, I am having problems with the 2 black mollys I have.

Couple of weeks ago I noticed that one had white spots which looked as though it had white spot which I treated and everything was fine. Now a couple of weeks later the same one was covered in white spots again, which I have treated but it only comes out to eat and lies on the gravel most of the time and the other one is starting to do the same but is not covered in white spots. Both of them tend to hide a lot. I have sone the treatment again but they dont seem to be responding as well.

Can anyone give me any guidance to what they think it may be and how to treat this.

Many Thanks

James

Hello and :hi: !!

Few questions here:
What size tank do you have them in?
Are those the only two fish in there you have?
Do you have aeration in the tank?
Do you use salt for your mollies?

Also be sure to check out the Livebearer's Section of the forum. As they will be able to help you out more in the future! :good:

Hi,

I have them in a 35 litre tank with 5 cardinal tetra's, 5 guppies, 2 corydora's. I have aeration in the tank but haven't used salt and I am started to wonder whether I have my tank overstocked.

Thanks

mollies are very susceptible to those white spots... what temperature is your water and is yoru temperature stable or does it fluctuate? from my experience, mollies can be kept fine without salt, ive tried salt but i prefer no salt. i also keep some catfish and botia so i dont use salt and i also keep my temperature at 80-81 degrees F, in the summers like now it gets a little above during the day. ive found that the mollies stay healthier in the slightly warmer water. i would say that yes you tank is overstocked. what type of filtration do you have? do you have an air pump?

and just out of curiosity, what is the gender of your two mollies?

Okay so assuming that your 35litre's equals about 10gallons. Yes you are overstocked.

Cardinal Tetra's = 1.5inches
Guppies = 1.5inches to 2.5 inches
Corydora's = varies depending on the breed you have
Mollies = 2inches to 4inches

That is a lot of fish for that tank. I would consider buying another tank if you could or take some fish back to your lfs.

As for you mollies, salt would help with the treatment of their whitespot. Do you have a heater in your tank? Fluctuating temperatures can affect fish greatly sometimes.

Hi,

I have an internal filter and an air pump. Both mollies are male as far as I am aware.

Thanks

hi,

I have been considering getting a larger tank and I do have a heater and the temperature is 25 degrees C.

Thanks

Mollies, particulaly black mollies origionale from brackish water, containing mild salt. If the white spots are only affecting the mollies, try fiving them a salt bath, ans the pots are beeing caursed by a lack of salt.
to salt bath;
1 - place 5 litres of tank water to a bucket
2 - add two tea spoons of salt
3 - stir to desolve salt
4 - net out mollies, and place into bucket
5 - leave for arroung half an hour
6 - return fish to their tank, and dicard water

the spots should clear withing a few weeks. White spot treatments will ne be effective, if the white spots are caursed by a lack of salt, so there will be no need to continue the white spot treatment for this problem
