both of my filters keep getting plugged up with brownish colored gook......i'm assuming algae...my tank is almost cycled, but i'm afraid to touch the filters....what do i do?

Is it affecting the flow from the filter? How long has it been cycling? Do you have fish in it yet? And if so how often do you feed them? Oh and what filter and tank size? Sorry to reply with so many questions.

when i say plugged up, i mean MOSTLY the flossy stuff in the filter that's getting plugged up with gook.

2 Whisper power filters.....20 gallon tank....... (one filter is for a 30 gallon, has the activated carbon, the other is for a 10, doesn't have anthing in it cept for the floss)....the larger filter i have to turn the intake to it's lowest setting or it overflows, the smaller one is running ok yet, but it's slowly backing up.

i am doing a cycle with fish and it's been cycling about 2 months.....

ammonia-.25 ppm
nitrite->8 ppm
nitrate (don't have a test for it)
Ph- ~7.6

i have one Irredescent Shark (3 inch), 2 fancy guppies, 2 albino cory's, and one ghost shrimp.

I feed them every other day, a small pinch of flake food
