I thought my new male fighter was getting a bit of fin rot, but after observing him for a while, it sems he his atcually attacking himself, when he turns and sees his tail, he nips it...

I have added some melafix to help it, but how can i stop him doing it as a lampshade wont fit around his nck lol.

Thanks

Wayne

tail chewing is triggered by either bordem, by stress, or confined spaces, hence the high amount of tail chewers found during shipping from abroad, i suppose being bored would cause a fish to be stressed cause i get stressed when im bored. maybe add some extra things to his tank or arrange it a bit to simulate his mind a bit more, hopefully distracting him from the issue of the tail, yup melafix is good to use

the section he his in is a very good size, there is 2 very nice size plants in his section and a piece of bogwood and also a bit of slate, i recently have changed him to the section where he can see another male, will this be ok as i thought this may distract him a bit, here is a pic of his home (its a 2ft tank sperated in to 4 sections...

the one i have i been biorb ( cracker) does exactly the same thing, i just thort it was normal, fortunatly he hasnt caused any damage ( as yet)
but i will be keeping my eye on him,i can see how he may get bored, but not with yours( with others to look at etc),maybe its a bad habit like when people eat their nails, who knows, but glad you asked i would have carried on thinking it was normal :)
