I introduced 3 new Santa Swordtails today to my wall mounted fish tank. 2 of them have now got long thin things which look like stems of plants hanging from their underbelly. Is this their waste hanging and if so is it normal or are they distressed.

My tank water is perfect in every dept and has 1 Siamese fighting fish, 2 bottom feeders, 4 gummy nosed tetras and 4 silver tailed tetras.

Please help ( worried lad)

Hi there,

I had a similar problem with my black HF sword. Right after she gave birth, she appeared flat. Several days later, she was dead. It looked like she'd exploded and on the plants there were a bunch of what appeared to be noodles. I later found out these were parasites. Her 11 fry are now 1.5 months old and their waste are long, whitish-gold and appear extra long and abnormal waste (probably parasites from their mom).

You need to treat these fish with anti-biotics and parasite meds. Because I hate to introduce pure medication into my water, I've opted to use medicated food. I purchased antibiotic medicated flakes at Aquabid and Jungle Parasite Food. My order hasn't arrived yet but I'm confident they will help my young juvies. You need to act quickly, as this problem (if it's something your fish has) can spread to other fish that are exposed. - Good Luck
