Hi all,

I have a tank 6x2x2 with two 300w heater and two fluvel fx5.
I think i might have a problem, all the fish seem to be gaspping for air. There all on top of the tank and have fast gill movement, i have also lost a few fish.
I have moved one intake pipe to break the water surface (this morning befor work), and done a 25% water change yesturday. Anyone got any ideas my partner in forms me there a shark on bottom of thak and my fire eel going potty swimming every were.

Any one got any ideas??
Cheers Tim

Hi - have you got a water testing kit at all? You really do need to have one, to be able to check now and then or when things seem to be a little unusual.

Fish gasping for air is usually down to high levels of toxins in the water coupled with a lack of oxygen. How long has your tank been cycled? What is your stock level/types?

How often do you do water changes and gravel vacs?

It's good that you did a water change but I think given the circumstances I would have been inclined to do more than 25% - the fish are obviously suffering at the moment so a 50% would have been better. Maybe you could do another water change today?

Have you added any extra fish in the last few days/weeks?

Sorry for so many questions but the more info you can supply, the quicker we can try to identify the problem.

Regards, Athena

Ny thoughts could it be due to lack of air in water

It sounds like ammonia poisoning. I'd honestly do about a 90% water change ... leave just enough water in there for the fish to swim upright. Put in clean dechlorinated water same temp as what you took out. Rinse filter media in old water and put back.

What are all the inhabitants?
