Can you have different types of tetreas to make up a shoal?

i.e., could i have 2 cardinals, 2 neons and 2 black ones tomake upa shoal of 6?
Or does a shoal have to comprise entirely of one type, e.g., all cardinals

Thanks

its ideal to have more than 4 of each. i had 5 neons and 2 x ray tetras and they got along just fine. though it would have been better to have 4 x rays. it just depends on your fish, im lucky as the neons and x rays were already together in my fs.

i think they prefer to have there own type in the shoal but they will get on fine in a tank

I have cardinals and rummy noses together. Very funny to watch actually, as despite their smaller size it's the Cardinals who dictate where in the tank they swim!

I agree, the cardinals will definatly dictate where to swim, rummy's are quite a shy fish.

If you really want the fish to shoal they are best in smaller numbers (however I never recommend any less than 6 of each species). In larger groups they have more confidence and don't shoal as much!

In fact some of my cardinals (I have 8 cardinals and 8 rummy's) have enough confidence to try to steal food from my angles!

your tetras will probably not school unless they get scared. My neon goes into my school of glowlighhts when it gets scared and harlequin rasbora will not seperate by five inches in my tank when they get scared and most of the time they school anyway.
:D

hehe that was the same with my neons and glowlights. it really does look good in tanks when you have the different colours together schooling.
