I'm about to give away most of my fry to a local fishkeeper. They are about 1/2" big right now and have become more individualistic so i started giving them away to people who i had promised them too.

QUestion is female is already plump again. Anyway to prevent her and the male from spawning again so soon. I'd like to give them some rest time so i can plump em up to MAX size but i have a feeling as soon as the last fry is gone they will start going at it again.

I keep my temp at 72-74 degrees but i doubt that will help. I plan on keeping maybe 2-3 of the fry and see if by keeping them around it will prolong breeding as much as possible.

Separating the two is not possible as i don't have another tank and i wanted to base my tank on a pair of cons, but not necessarily an active breeding pair.

Any tricks to prevent spawning?

give one or both of them away and raise the fry.. then let the fry breed

Well, i want to raise the cons up to MAX size possible.

Hard to do if i keep giving them away

add a divider thats the only way too stop them.
i had a breeding pair of cons and the female died due to breeding too much and not eating it was just worn out by too much fish sex.
i did keep one pair until 1 month ago when i sold them the male was 6'' and the female was 3''.
dixon

Hmm, now you guys have me contemplating giving my breeding pair away.

I might just add a bunch more neon tetras, a couple coolie loaches and toss a ton more plants in and just make it a heavily planted aquarium. It might not have the cool factor as keeping a breeding pair of cons, but it's peaceful and i don't need to worry about giving away 50 fish once a month.

WHo knows. I got about 10-15 more fry to give away then i might give the parents away too

Tell me about it. They just had a 2nd batch of eggs yesterday and they still have the fry from the previous month's batch.

It gets harder to even give them away[ fry ] each time. They are great little fish , real power houses . When I had mine[ 3" male female almost half that ] they would push the gavel , I swear I had piles 5 to 8" high in there tank . " Bull Dozers".

I really need some sort of in-tank predator for these fry.

I've already given a ton away and a I can't keep fishing them out and feeding them to my female betta.

Anybody know where i can neuter a convict cichlid???

Ah, the memories of keeping Convicts...

... getting woken up at 12:30 at night to rocks being thrown around the tank and like lucky62 said - the gravel piled high at one end.

I miss them.

WOW making convicts Stop Breeding is hard, Is like taking sex away from a college student LMAO
