Hi All

I think that I maybe purchasing a pressurised co2 unit in the near future. Does anyone have any recommendations on what is the best out there.

I have seen the JBL, D&D, Hydor, etc etc

They all vary in price which is actually the best for its price.

Do the cylinders all last the same amount of time? If so how long should you be replacing/refilling

This will be on the larger tank

Many Thanks for any help

Can I suggest you do some research? Try Aquatics online first off, they have most of the different types of kits that are available so you can see the types and also costs.

Very very briefly, there are two types yeast and pressurized, yeast is only really ok for smaller tanks but is cheap, pressurised is for any size tank but is expensive.

Things to think about are what size the tank is, how much you have to spend and how willing you are to be changing yeast mixes every few days if necessary.

Can I also suggest you read this post, this post and also have a look at my low-tech journal, they should give you most of the info you need regarding pressurised kits and putting one together yourself.

Thanks for the Info Sam

I should have added the information about my large tank really.

I have sochtang carbonator from Maidenhead aquatics for use with tanks upto 250 litres, I then added 1 Nutrafin system using Sugar and yeast, did not seem to make much difference, so added another. Plants are growing ok.

I have to make a choice of paying out £8.50 for 2 months supply for the sochtang carbonator and keep adding sugar/yeast every week (Bit of a pain) or get a pressurised system that I do not have to do much to.

I have seen all the various Co2 systems, was after some recommendations on which one to get, there are several on ebay that I have seen such as the JBL, D&D and Hydor. I think that they are all pretty similar and have the basics for a co2 system but does anyone have any experience using them, which is best?

How long should a normal size gas cylinder last in a 400 litre tank? reason I ask is that it maybe cheaper to get another Sochtang carbonator at £32, then £8.50 every month to refill both.

Also are Pressurised easier to control, do not want to add another Carbonator if its going to cause issues.

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave

I have just started to use Co2 with my 450 litre tank (similar size to you), and I purchased the Dennerle Co2 system with Gas cylinder and everything else you need in one kit. Its very good quality equipment, with easy to follow setup instructions. They sell their kits by the size of tank you have in litres. Your tank being the same size as mine, you would probably need the same kit. This is where I brought from:

Hobby Fish

I dont if you live anywhere near Milton Keynes where Hobby Fish are, but they specialise in Planted Aquaria, and you will get good advice. They have always been most helpful when I have visited.

Hi Brian

Thanks very much for that.

Hmm not sure I could consider paying £200 for one, the D&D one is £100 cheaper.

I live in Rugby so not that far away really but chance having it, I am picking up a new company mobile from boss who lives in milton Keynes, so I may just have to pop in on the way back.

just had a look at the website, I have no idea what any of it says but I think the postage is 22.50 Euro's, so whats that about £16-£17

Thats not bad for the complete set up, £136 + postage.

The only thing I have no idea what the items are as it is in German.

Brian with your dennerle set up where do you get the Gas from to refill the co2 bottle?

Regards
Dave

Hobby Fish in MK will re-fill the cyliners for you. When I brought the setup he said it should last about 3 months on my tank, and the re-fills would be £10. I'm not sure if thats good for re-fill cost? I have not shopped around yet.

Brian

Im planning to buy a new bottle or two to use with the rest of the kit once it is emptied.

We have located more than one place to help with bottles so it isnt a problem getting new ones or even getting them refilled.

Hi Joel, thats the same place i got my whole co2 system off about 3 months ago. I am very satisfied with it aswell, ive fitted a 7.5kg bottle & it works great. I payed about £68 including delivery which i thought was a bargain. :good: also i get my co2 & rented bottle from Air Products they have sites all over the uk.

Brian/Ginge

I went there today, they do have their own bottles and could do me a set up a lot cheaper but the dennerle stuff would not attach to their bottles.

I still think the D&D CO2 looks the best set up with the solenoid included, on ebay for £99 and free delivery.

Still have not decided whether to pay the money for a set up, as what I am using is sufficiant its just a little time consuming changing 2 nutrafins every week.

mantis147 what does it cost you to rent the CO2 bottle?

Cheers
Dave
