Fish Fanatic
I have a couple of big females (guppies) actually only 2 that are the best and biggest females i got that gave birth to huge batches last month. They were great fry and i still have them, very big little guys. Grew quiet fast when i fed them freshly hatched baby brine shrimp. Anyway as expected the females were getting ready to give another batch so i put them in their 1 gallon with lots of floating plants to relax.
Well I should go ahead and tell ya so you know what happened in my case but i bought a few guppies about 2 weeks ago and didn't find out that one of them had a parasite until to late so i was treating that. Well yesterday one of females which her body was now square shapped had lost the ability to hold herself upright and her back fin and body was curved to more of a an "L" shape. I figure she wouldn't make it but i left her alone and went to give my mom her mothers day gift along with a little shopping. When i get home there are a few babies dead but the rest are premature. I know they were premature because they had a huge belly and couldn't really swim.
Well i figure they aren't that tiny so i put them in the 5 gallon with my other fry which has large gravel (I didn't realize it was so large until to late). The fry went straight into the gravel and dug themselves into an early grave. After noticing what they were doing, i tried to slowly get them back out and put them temporarly in a breeder box until they could swim normally.
It took hours to get most of those fry and i know i didn't get all of them, maybe 5-10 died out of 30-40. So warning! If you get premature guppy fry place them in a gravel free enviroment for their first few days because i didn't find out till today but they can't swim with that egg yolk still in their stomach and therefore will dig themselves into the gravel. (Which if its large then its impossible to get them) I'm now switching the gravel to much much smaller and going to quartine all newborns for their first couple of days until i make sure they won't have any problems.
Just thought i would help out anyone else that has that problem. By the way these fry are not deformed, Most of the fry are starting to swim normal in the breeder box.
