I have a couple of big females (guppies) actually only 2 that are the best and biggest females i got that gave birth to huge batches last month. They were great fry and i still have them, very big little guys. Grew quiet fast when i fed them freshly hatched baby brine shrimp. Anyway as expected the females were getting ready to give another batch so i put them in their 1 gallon with lots of floating plants to relax.

Well I should go ahead and tell ya so you know what happened in my case but i bought a few guppies about 2 weeks ago and didn't find out that one of them had a parasite until to late so i was treating that. Well yesterday one of females which her body was now square shapped had lost the ability to hold herself upright and her back fin and body was curved to more of a an "L" shape. I figure she wouldn't make it but i left her alone and went to give my mom her mothers day gift along with a little shopping. When i get home there are a few babies dead but the rest are premature. I know they were premature because they had a huge belly and couldn't really swim.

Well i figure they aren't that tiny so i put them in the 5 gallon with my other fry which has large gravel (I didn't realize it was so large until to late). The fry went straight into the gravel and dug themselves into an early grave. After noticing what they were doing, i tried to slowly get them back out and put them temporarly in a breeder box until they could swim normally.

It took hours to get most of those fry and i know i didn't get all of them, maybe 5-10 died out of 30-40. So warning! If you get premature guppy fry place them in a gravel free enviroment for their first few days because i didn't find out till today but they can't swim with that egg yolk still in their stomach and therefore will dig themselves into the gravel. (Which if its large then its impossible to get them) I'm now switching the gravel to much much smaller and going to quartine all newborns for their first couple of days until i make sure they won't have any problems.

Just thought i would help out anyone else that has that problem. By the way these fry are not deformed, Most of the fry are starting to swim normal in the breeder box.

I am so sorry that that has happened to you.

Although I am not actively breeding at the moment, when I was I did have 2 tanks for the fry.The fist one I didn't have any gravel in and just a sponge filter and plants. Then once they were big enough I moved them into a more "set up" tank.

It certainly is a good thing to remember though.

I just started breeding guppies and loving ever bit of it. I had read a little about premature but never experienced it so i just wanted to warn other people about it. I did think about making the 5 gallon gravel less but i had no problems before with the tiny gravel and now i'm going to keep the newborns in a breeder trap for their first week or so.

Actually right now i'm just going to feed my newborns baby brine shrimp to help them grow fast enough to catch up to last months fry. Then transfer the newborns to the 5 gallon.

sorry about wat happened.

i had a fry set up once ages ago and i did use gavel. But it was relly relly small. It sorta looked like sand. so the fry survived fine. u should also keep gravel because fry always get hungry and if there isnt gravel they will eat all the waiste on the floow which isnt relly good for them.

is it harmful to the babies to do that? x.x i usually let the fry go and within the next day i see them swimming around... -_-

I had premature guppy fry a while back too! they were about 1/4 the size of regular fry, they were like a 2mm long hair with a slight buldge at the tip. They wer perfectly alive, had them in a nursury tank, I used established tank water to fill it and a plany to ensure they had food to syphon in the water.

Problem was after that a normal batch of fry were born... I didnt realise they would eat the premature fry.... eeuuuww.

Hmm, i'm glad you said something about the food in the gravel. But don't waste collect in the gravel the way it would without gravel?

Are you asking if its harmful for the fry to dig in the gravel when they are premature? Its only harmful if they swim to deep in the gravel that they cannot get back out to get food. They can also be crushed easily with that kind of weight of the gravel on top of them. Most of my premature fry were digging very very deep and would have otherwise died if i didn't save them. But, there was a few that didn't go to deep and started swimming around later.

Yeah i noticed my last month batch was chasing some regular newborns around the tank so i have them in the breeder and going to try and grow them quickly with brine shrimp.
