Hi, My mum has a 3 foot tank and only 5 fish remaining. 1 x 10cm bristlenosed cat, 2 neon tetras, 1 black tetra and another kind of tetra which i think is female. The only thing is this last tetra we have only noticed has a huge belly. You would think it was pregnant but i cannot see gravid spots and it's spine looks a little distorted. I have pregnant guppies and they look completely different. It goes to the bottom of the tank and stays there a while so we thought it could be about to give birth but that was a week ago. Now we are worried it could have a disease, be in pain or be constipated. It has been in the tank with no new fish for years so we find it funny it suddenly is pregnant. Any ideas on what it could be? I will try to post a picture but it looks like a tetra with a humumgous belly.

Hi,

It won't have a gravid spot as tetras are egg layers. Does it look like it's scales are sticking out as it could have dropsy what are the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph levels in the tank?

I would get the fish out of the tank quickly, as if the spine is bent you are dealing with fish tb.

also if you ARE dealing with TB its VITALLY important that you make sure you wash your hands after being in the tank, this can be passed on to people and children. its not nice. look it up on the net

it does sound to me like dropsy though. is the fish 'pine cone looking' with its scales sticking out?

the chances of it being pregnant are very slim as tetras are very hard to breed in the home aquarium

Well, i'm sorry it has taken so long to respond. Life's been busy.

My mum's fish is all better. It had a kind of white fungy growing on it and the fish was getting thinner each day and this lump was getting bigger. Mum put some epsom salts in and 2 days later the tetra started swimming more and the lump got smaller. Now it is back in the tank with all the other fish and it's perfectly fine. The guy at the local aquarium doesn't understand it as he thought it was a goner too. Good news hey

Yes that is good news, keep an eye on it thought to make sure it put weight on.
