Hey all, I recently bought a pair (M/F) of green swordtails. The female is obviously pregnant (the gravid spot is there), but her stomach isn't very big yet. The rocks in my gravel are a little bigger than normal, and I think I've found a lot of dead fry underneath :( I do have false java grass, so I don't see why they wouldn't go there. I've also heard that it's not a good idea to keep the females in a breeding net because it can stress her (seems like she'd be cramped in there). I dunno what to do...should I buy a breeder box or should I isolate her into a smaller 2 gallon and wait for her to give birth? (There isn't a heater on it, so that's another thing I'm worried about.)

the thing is JumJum
Swordtails are often the hardest of the livebearers to breed simply because they see fry as part of there diet.
Whereas molly, platy and guppy will usually not eat there fry after 4 hours of being born but swordtails will still try to eat them.
People often think java moss and such like fine leaved plants are the answer to saving all your fry, well there not swordtails or any other fish can easily navigate there way through it especially when the reward is lunch.
i suggest using a net breeding trap next time, even though this isn't my first choise because of the stress they cause it is in my opinion the only way of succesfully breeding swordtails.

GOOD LUCK
