pregnant platys

Ive been told to look out for a black spot by the anal fin to see if my platy is pregnant but the back half of her is completely black so I dont think I would be able to see one if it was there, is there any other way of telling if she is pregnant??

fraid i cant post a pic (not that technologicaly advanced!!) shes definately got bigger and shes definately a female (+the others are males) but she seems to have been like that for ages!! not too sure how long exactly, she also seems bigger sometimes than others+then she seems to shrink a bit?! surely she couldnt get smaller if shes carrying fry? First we had just fed her and she was big so we thought maybe she had just eaten a lot but her big stomach doesnt always seem dependant on her having just eaten?

Dark coloured platys (blue neons etc) often have a gravid spot that is always visible. Easiest way to tell is to look at her head on (ie: her mouth pointing at your eyes). Compare her body shape to another platy - if she's significantly larger/rounder, she's pregnant.

They will plump up for about a month, then appear to suddenly deflate after giving birth.
