Hi,

I have a platy that I'm almost positive is pregnant. First off she has almost doubled in size around the middle in two weeks. Second when she swims up near the light I can see what looks like a whole bunch of eggs in her abdomen. My question is that I don't see any gravid spot. Does that mean the eggs are sterile? I ended up with one female and one male, although the male looked like a female when he was young, hence I named him Beezus. Anyway, at two weeks should I be seeing a gravid spot that is well defined? I'm new to this and just want to make sure Joan is OK.

hmm.. you cant see eggs on a livebearer and for some it takes a while to produce other members will give more detail as i havent time but i wouldnt worry about it :good:

lol platys dont have eggs..
they give birth to live fry. hint the name "livebearers" and little black spots inside the grivid spot are the fry's eyes.

wait are these dworf platys? if they are dworfs get bigger around the belly as they grow.

These are dwarf platys, but my other platy just sort of got bigger over time. Joan has grown huge in two weeks and only around, not in length. She looks like she is going to explode any minute now. Anyway, thanks for the info. I'm not sure what is going on, but she is not growing anything like the others I've had.

My orange platty has what appears to be round see through eggs in her belly in the 2-3 week stage. Her belly (gravid spot) then turns black for the last week-10 day before giving birth. The egg shapes may just be the fry curled up inside her. I have seen this effect on 2 of my orange platties but it's not noticable on the eletric blue plattys.

I have an orange platy that is either absurdly obese or pregnant. I say that because it seems like she has a gravid spot but I can't really tell whether it is a shadow, a gravid spot, or I am just imagining it. I figure maybe it is due to her color that makes it difficult to tell? I have a couple of silver platies that when they have been pregnant you can see distinct gravid spots, so I'm just wondering if this is similar to the expierience of others.

It's neet close to labour later on in the pregnacy you can really see the fry outline not only the eyes, my mommy platy has just had her second birth and is pregn again so more sunburst platies are on the way the current count is 11 platy fry
