I just bought a black molly last week. The lady at the store said she thought she looked pregnant, but neither one of us were sure. She is rather large on her bottom side, and in the last 48 hrs got a heck of a lot bigger, so much she looks kinda odd. :) How do i know if she is and how do i care for her and the babies?

if she is really big around the belly, 9/10 chances she's pregnet, the 1/10 is she's obese and has to stop eating mcdonalds  J/k! but, she won't take care of teh fry, she will eat em. be sure to provide many hiding places (for the fry, not the moma) that the momma can't get in .

LOL @ eating mcdonalds. that will do it. okay, so she will eat her fry? should i get one of those nets Ive been reading about? I have a section of breeding grass in one part of the tank...will that not be good enough?

YES SHE WILL EAT FRY! do not get a net either! it puts stress on them. give them lots of places to hide, that the momma can 't get into.

You can either:
  • Get a Breeding net, and catch the fry once the mother gives birth, then stick them in there to let them grow a little
  • Get a fry tank. This is probably the best option, as Mollies have lots of fry, usually. Then they will have some room to grow up.
  • Or, you can let the mother give birth in the tank. If there are some hiding places, chances are some fry will survive. I know it sounds cruel, but this way you won't have quite as many babies.
Just a warning...there will be a lot of fry, and they are all going to need homes. And chances are she will keep having fry, for a few more pregnancies, or her whole life, if there is a male in with her.

But I have to say...A fry tank is probably going to be your best option.

As for feeding...(This is only if they are in a breeding net, or in a fry tank)
Fry foods are good for the first few weeks, along with Baby Brine Shrimp. For fry foods, I recommend Tetramin Fry, and Hikari First Bites. You shouldn't just feed Baby Brine Shrimp, because it's very high protein, and that can cause some problems like bloating...Best to intermingle it. After they are big enough, you can move on to crushed flakes foods, and also keep using the Baby Brine Shrimp. Ideally, You can alternate the Brine Shrimp with freeze-dried or frozen foods like Bloodworms, Daphnia, Tubifex Worms. Variety is good. Mollies also like veggies, so you can blanch a very small piece of Zucchini, Cucumber, Lettuce etc.

And remember...fry need good water quality, so lots of water changes!

Best of luck.
