bought a some green swordtails today, to get them home and discover one of the females is very pregnant, large gravid spot and very square looking.

confused by the varying talk around about breeding traps. she is in one at the minute and seems relatively happy, before we put her in the trap she was thrashing about the sides of the tank and being chased by one of the males.

so should we leave her in there or let her out, we have a large community tank and are concerned the fry wont survive for very long unless in a trap but dont want to cause the female any distress.

she had them! first thing this morning

had 30+ were impossible to count properly.

but somehow and no idea how there are only 13 left in the tank - breeding tank. mum didnt eat any of them, somehow it look like they are being knocked out of the holes in the bottom of the trap by the 2 angels we have that wont leave the trap alone. hopefully the others will survive the day!

Angels are notoriuos for eating fry, unless you do something about the angels or you put your fry in a separete tank you wont have any left

I have a female swordtail who seems to be pregnant 24/7, I never put her in a breeding trap but leave her with all the rest of the fish in the main tank. To be fair only a few of the fry survive (this does not make a difference since she is always pregnant) but, when I do see fry I put them in the tank to save the female from getting stressed (the fry don't mind it as they are so small). Only today we discoverd 11 tiny fry swimming about in the corner!
We take our fry to a local fish store once they have grown to about 2-4cms.
