i've got the standard male to two females (both mollies and swordtails). the males haven't seemed to show much interest in the females. are the females always ready to get pregnant, or do they go into heat or something? i'm starting to wonder if somehow the two boys i have just don't like girls :dunno:

my female swordtail was pregnant when i got her and shes been pregnant ever since........4 batches of fry to date. your time will come........then you will have lots of fry.........maybe even too many......like me!!.....

your females just may not be ready yet......trust me though in a few months you'll be posting asking what to do with all the fry you have! LOL

What are your water parameters though? Sometimes if something is out of whack in the tank they wont breed......although this statement is usual for the harder to breed types....as mollies and swords and guppies and platties usually breed jsut because you looked at them weird! lol

I'd think that they have to get adjusted. You could prompt the breeding by doing water changes and adding live/ frozen food. My red wags aren't breeding yet, but they're still new. I'll give them a few weeks before questioning if everyhting's alright.

Thanks for the help so far. and this might be a dumb question, but how do you test your water's parameters? i assume my water's good- i've got mechanical and biological filtration in both tanks and i usually do a couple small water changes once or twice a week and a 20% once a week.

Hi longhorn, I had males that showed no interest either at first (swords), then one day they were into everyone! They were just slower to mature. I wouldn't worry, they will be interested soon.

Hey there,
You can buy test kits at your lfs. The have a "master kit" which tests for ph, amonia, nitrate, and nitrite. Or they have seperate liquid tests for each of these things, or they have the quick and easy (controversy of whether they actually work) dip sticks that will also test for the above mentioned. They all come with directions and with a chart to let you know what the color of the liquid or strip means. Quit easy and a great way to know what exactly may begoing on in your tank if you are having problems. :D
