One of my female guppies is very much pregnant but she so fat it looks like her scales are sticking out, she is in a breeding trap and has been since yesterday but I was just worried about the scales sticking out......is she pregnant or could it be dropsy?

Scales shouldn't be sticking out if she is just pregnant. Sounds like dropsy to me. :/

Sometimes this will happen when they get pregnant, though, and it will go away after they give birth.

Just keep an eye on her though, stop feeding any high protein foods like bloodworms/tubifex/daphinia etc and and try and feed her some cooked de-shelled peas or algae wafers every day and try to cut down on the amount of fish flakes she has to 3 day. Keeping good water quality and making sure the breeding net isn't directly under the tank lights(if so, find somthing to shade it) will also help encourage her to give birth faster.
Guppys can often get dropsy when heavily pregnant and in most cases, it clears up after the female has given birth but just keep an eye on her as the desease as it can be very hard to treat.

The strangest thing has happened........I went to the breeding trap today to check on her ande she has vanished.....the hood of the tank has not been moved atall, she was there at 1am....bloated but happy, then 7am I went to look for babies and ......nothing.

She was in a breeding trap and cant imagine she would (or indeed COULD jump out)....where on earth did she go?

This has happened a couple of times now where over night fish (including a 7" elephant fish and a 9" birchir) and before anyone says they have hiddenin bog wood or under the gravel or in the filter I almost took the tanks apart and found NOTHING, no remains or anything, they both disapeared over night, if they had jumped out (I know polypeterus are great escape artists) I would have known, the lids would be moved at least or water etc.....

....anyway......any idea's?.....my wife is actually getting a little scared!

Thanks for you help anyway guys!

my betta usually jumps out of traps really easily... look around the location of the tank because when fish jumps out of tanks... they usually just keep flopping around. She may be under a sofa or what not. If you can't find her, check to see if you have any ground based air vents... she could be in there.

I have had several females jump out of the breeding trap, but they usually just jump back into the tank... Maybe if she is too stressed just let her give birth in the big tank.

But if she did jump out the breeding trap she should be in the tank but she isnt and she couldnt have jumped out the tank without closing the hood after her.....my male betta used to jump aswell, at feeding time especially.

Ah well......I'll put it down to experience and convince my wife we dont have a fish stealing poltergiest.

....yes, I laughed aswell.

I have a net typre breeder with a plastic frame, I've found if they get scared sometimes they squeeze themselves under the plastic frame and then get stuck, if you don't look for them there you probably won't find them...

check all your ornaments and plants, it could of died. i have found recently a dead mollie under an ornament and was there for some time which infected my fish with fungus :(

good luck!

first thing you need to do is check your tank properly, under rocks, in pants, etc...

Also what is your hood like? does it have holes at the back where the leads go through? fish get out this way a lot.

my fish do the same i have laminate flooring but no beading round the edge and i went to see if 1 gave birth and she had gone when i pulled the cabinet out she was inbetween the crack she was dead they are buggers somtimes but i find my swordtails do it alot ,she has to be somewere try behind the tank ect if they find a whole they will go through it
