Hi!

So, I got my balloon mollies just last week and I think 2 of them could possibly be pregnant. This is my first time with BALLOON mollies and it's incredibly hard to tell.. but they both look considerably fatter than the other 2. If they are, I'm also wondering how far along they could be?

I would really really appreciate any help!!

(also.. sorry for the not-so-great quality pics!)

I can't give you an approximate drop time because I've never kept balloons, but I have kept other mollies and those look pregnant. They're both within a week of dropping but I'm not sure quite when.

Look for the signs of very close to dropping - hanging around the corners of the tank or hiding all the time, antisocial behavior and sometimes refusing food.

Balloon mollies can be very hard to judge, (best way is to as soon as you see fry, mark down the date and do this for about 3-4 drops to see her pattern behavior)

Anyways, the best way to tell when balloon mollies are pregnant is by looking at them from above (overhead view), they get very very wide when they are heavily pregnant, there back end of thier belly also drops more than the front and near thier anal fin thier canal goes very big (bigger than normal livebearers)....

Other than that, look for the signs like laura said :)

So you can get a rough idea on how they look when have pregnant, here is a short video of my balloon mollies just before they dropped Click here to watch

Oh, wow! Do they usually get that big?!?! I tried to get an overhead picture, but they wouldn't stay close to the top long enough for me to get a clear shot.

Thank you both very much!!

balloon mollies will become much larger when they are pregnant. they also will show a gravid spot (depending on color). I also noticed that they will often sit on the gravil when ready :)

btw great balloons they are awsome! and i also see you are using a tank divider like me HEHE

great stuff!

Just thought I would update..

Yesterday I tried to move some of the plants and out swam 3 fry! (also found one dead, deformed one) I moved the rocks a little and couldn't find any more. Not sure how long they were there, but I'm assuming the others were killed or eaten. :( I'm guessing it was the black one, seeing as she doesn't look so.. plump.

Thank you all for the help :D

and yes, I love the divider!

It's hard to tell with balloon mollies isn't it! lol I have 3 myself and the day after I got them one did start having babies. She gave birth over the course of three days and her size didn't change one bit! So I don't know if she's still full of babies or not. She's the same size as my other two balloon mollies though. Yours very well could be pregnant. It's so hard to tell! Good luck!
