to save as many fry as poss i always leave my mums in the main tank, and have floating bushy live plants for the fry to hide in then use my breeding net for the fry, ive had no luck with putting mums in traps they seem to abort, sorry if ive not been helpfull :/

ABORTED!!!!!!!!! wot do you mean??????

Mollies, when stressed, give birth to dead babies. Other livebearers will do this too. Halfbeaks are worse than mollies about it. Guppies and platies seem less sensitive.

The main thing to remember is once the female is obviously pregnant, treat her with all the respect you'd give any other "expectant mum". She's in a delicate situation. Never lift her out with a net, and except for the smallest species of livebearer, never confine her in a breeding trap (whatever the guy in the local fish store says!). Too much buffeting by males mollies or aggressive fish will also cause her to miscarry.

Though rarely discussed, diet and temperature are probably factors as well. Mollies like it a bit on the warm side, and making sure their diet is optimal (i.e., rich in algae as well as meaty foods) will go a long way to ensuring you get a nice healthy brood of babies to play with.

Cheers,

Neale

I will always leave them in the main tank with lots of plants & hiding place (drift wood, stone, marble).
